Railways are a vital part of Kansas’ transportation infrastructure, connecting communities and supporting the state’s economy. KDOT is committed to supporting efforts for railway safety, while promoting safety education and maintaining an efficient transportation network for passengers and freight.

Kansas Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail crossings and preventing trespassing on or near railroad tracks.

With KDOT programs like the Rail Service Improvement Program (RSIP), which gives grants to railroads, shippers and local governments for improving and building tracks, railways are supported throughout the state.

KDOT’s Freight and Rail Unit develops and coordinates state policy, analyzes performance, and administers funding related to rail issues. The unit produces Kansas’ State Rail Plan and the Kansas State Freight Plan and oversees the (Rail Plan Advisory Committee) RPAC.
