Project Description
The U.S. 281 modernization project will improve approximately 3.5 miles of highway in Osborne County between the north U.S. 24/281 junction and south city limits of Portis. The roadway will be reconstructed and widened into a 30-foot paved surface with 3-foot turf shoulders. The bridge over the North Fork Solomon River will be replaced as well.
Project work will begin in early 2025, with construction taking place off the roadway. KDOT plans to close the road in March 2025 and reopen it in late fall. A state route detour using U.S. 281, U.S. 36, K-181 and U.S. 24 will be in effect during the closure.
