The Bridge and Culvert Railing Program addresses the risk of collision with concrete railings at bridge and culvert locations on the state highway system. In total, 68 bridge and culvert sites with a railing type were identified, evaluated and prioritized for replacement based on treatment needs. As projects move into design and construction, progress can be followed via the program dashboard.

Prioritization Approach

The program evaluated bridges and culverts on the state highway system with concrete railings while considering several factors, including:

  • Location of the railing with respect to the clear zone
  • Bridge or culvert length
  • Proximity of the railing to the roadway
  • Railing type

Information about each railing determined the appropriate treatment and priority of each site. Priority considerations included:

  • Posted speed limit
  • Right of way width
  • Crash data
  • Bridge information

Treatment Options

One of the following treatment options was assigned to each structure:

Option 1: Install guardrail that could redirect vehicles.

KDOT Bridge and Culvert Railing Option 1

Option 2: Remove the railing and extend the structure beyond the clear zone.

KDOT Bridge and Culvert Railing Option 2

Option 3: Replace existing structure(s), which would remove railing identified for replacement.

Project Progress

The Bridge and Culvert Railing Progress Report tracks treatment project status. In this dashboard, users can monitor progress for active railing treatment design or construction. Hover over the status icons to view the project details. Users can also filter the map by status (in design, under construction, complete), county, district and structure type. Status stages are defined as:

  • In Design: Treatment option selected and in design/pre-construction phases.
  • Under Construction: Railing treatment in active construction.
  • Complete: Railing treatment completed.
