The Bureau of Maintenance at KDOT oversees building management, radio communications, vehicle and heavy equipment planning, highway maintenance policies, emergency preparedness, and maintenance quality assurance to deliver a transportation system that keeps Kansans moving forward.
What is KDOT responsible for?
- Administering KDOT’s statewide building program, overseeing planning, specifications, coordination, and budget monitoring. KDOT manages 955 buildings, including 206 occupied ones.
- Administering the capital equipment plan for vehicles and heavy equipment, including usage monitoring, replacement evaluation, and updating plans.
- Maintaining policies and guidance for highway maintenance, including the Maintenance Manual, Guardrail Repair/Design Policy, Utility Accommodation Policy, and snow and ice operations.
- Managing the Maintenance Quality Assurance (MQA) program, which annually surveys highway segments to check conditions against standards.
- Managing the statewide radio system shared with 1,005 other public safety agencies, supporting nearly 19,000 radios.
- Managing weather forecasting contracts and overseeing the Remote Weather Information System (RWIS) with 43 sites providing local weather and road data.
- Supporting emergency preparedness and representing KDOT at the Emergency Operations Center during emergencies.
