The Bureau of Traffic Engineering is divided into two main sections. Traffic Engineering and Signing. The Bureau plays an important role within KDOT, focusing on reducing fatal and injury crashes.  

Traffic Engineering Responsibilities

  • Designing and developing intersection improvements, traffic signals, lighting, and pavement marking plans.
  • Conducting traffic studies to recommend safety improvements. 
  • Managing federal and state aid funds for cities. 

Signing Group Responsibilities

  • Designing and reviewing plans for permanent signs on the state highway system. 
  • Managing federal and state aid funds to maintain compliance with signing guidelines. 
  • Developing and reviewing traffic control plans for work zones on the state highway system.
