Ramp reopening delayed on I-135 at Newton

Post Date:06/01/2022

Reopening of the northbound I-135 ramp to eastbound U.S. 50, on the north side of Newton, has been delayed from Wednesday, June 1, to Saturday, June 4. The delay is due to heavy rainfall.

The ramp has been closed as part of a ramp patching project along I-135 at Newton.

The ramp is expected to reopen by noon Saturday, June 4, as part of the Kansas Department of Transportation project. Local motorists will still have access to eastbound U.S. 50 from Old Trail Road.

While the ramp from northbound I-135 to eastbound U.S. 50 is closed, KDOT is offering the following route as a detour: from northbound I-135 to K-15, north on K-15 to U.S. 56, east on U.S. 56 to U.S. 77, then south on U.S. 77 to U.S. 50 at Florence.

KDOT uses state highways for official detour routes for safety, weight and maintenance concerns.

The work is part of a continuing ramp-pavement patching project on U.S. 50/I-135 interchanges on the south and north sides of Newton. The project also involves patching on I-135 ramps at First Street and Broadway in Newton.

The project is expected to end around late July. Only one ramp will be closed at a time. A single lane closure may be needed on sections of I-135 and U.S. 50. Motorists will be directed to drive at a reduced speed.

KDOT will continue to provide updates on when each ramp will close as the project progresses.

Vogts-Parga Construction, of Newton, is the primary contractor for the $1,179,492 project.
