Westbound I-70 closure rescheduled for this weekend

Post Date:07/11/2024

The westbound I-70 closure through downtown Topeka has been rescheduled for this weekend to allow pavement patching to take place on the Polk-Quincy Viaduct.

Conditions permitting, the Kansas Department of Transportation will close westbound I-70 from S.E. Adams Street to Topeka Boulevard at 11 p.m. on Friday, July 12. The closure will be in place until work is complete, or no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 14.

The S.E. Adams Street exit will be the last open exit for westbound motorists. Through traffic will follow signed detours and be routed south to I-470, or north to K-4 to U.S. 24 to U.S. 75. Or drivers can follow the local street detour on S.E. Adams Street, 10th Avenue and Topeka Boulevard to the 1st Street I-70 on-ramp.

Eastbound I-70 traffic will remain open.

Additional I-70 closures may occur if further patching work is needed on the viaduct. If necessary, KDOT will work with the City of Topeka to schedule the closure and provide information when available.

Both directions of I-70 on the Polk-Quincy Viaduct will stay reduced to one lane until construction of the viaduct’s replacement is complete. The Polk-Quincy Viaduct project is scheduled to begin in early 2025.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone. To stay aware of highway construction projects across Kansas, go to www.KanDrive.gov or call 5-1-1.
